Founding Engineer

Your new workplace:

Peony is a visionary productivity platform committed to transforming team efficiency by tackling two significant challenges: the lack of context in file sharing and collaboration and the inconvenient need to switch between multiple tools for daily tasks. Their platform facilitates rich, contextual interaction, eliminating the clutter caused by disparate communication channels such as Slack, Jira, emails, and notebooks.

The passionate and dedicated team is pioneering the next generation of file systems. They create solutions that feel intuitively right. Working closely with creative agencies, their initial demo has garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback, indicating strong market resonance.

Their unified workspace enables seamless integration and operation of both web and native applications—including Microsoft Office Tools, Figma, Photoshop, and GitHub—freeing users from the burden of excessive browser tabs and constant file transfers. This streamlined environment enhances productivity and simplifies digital workflows, empowering teams to focus on their most impactful work.

They’re supported by a strong network of investors, including Backed.VC, the co-founder of Twitter and the founder of Behance.

Your new role:

As Peony’s Founding Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the success of their product by shipping an exceptional product that feels simple, authentic, and refreshing in an exciting, fast-paced environment. You will work directly with the Founder & CEO and the Founding Designer to launch ground-breaking features, moving all aspects of the product in harmony. Your responsibilities include:

  • Architecting frontend solutions and shipping breakthrough products from ideas to production.
  • Pushing for speed in execution while keeping the quality of the product high.
  • Provide accurate estimates and make sound technical decisions for business priorities.
  • Hitting delivery timelines and knowing when to cut corners and when to prioritize quality.
  • Collaborating closely with the founding team to rapidly launch new product iterations.
  • Taking part in building the team in the next 9 - 12 months.

What you’ll need to be a success:

You’re instrumental in driving the rapid iteration of products, and you can skillfully navigate between launching a minimum viable product (MVP) and making critical decisions when further refinement and enhancement are needed. You know when to ensure that all engineering efforts align with the overarching business priorities, maximizing efficiency and impact.

You can identify and leverage creative, non-code-based solutions to address complex challenges effectively and are adept at translating strategic vision into actionable plans, leading to successful project completions. Furthermore, you are:

  • Experienced with Svelte and SvelteKit: Proficient in building dynamic, reactive web applications. Alternatively, you have vast experience with React.
  • Experienced with Yjs and Prosemirror using TypeScript: Skilled in creating real-time collaborative tools, enhancing product functionality and user collaboration.
  • Has demonstrated success as a lead individual contributor with a strong track record of delivering projects effectively and efficiently.
  • Consistently achieves high accuracy in project time and resource estimations.
  • Ensures a high pass rate in User Acceptance Testing, reflecting the ability to meet or exceed user requirements.
  • Minimizes carryover of tasks in agile sprints to ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Possesses strong product thinking skills, capable of developing functional prototypes or solutions from minimal and broad directives.

What you’ll get in your new role:

Peony understands the leap of faith required to join an early-stage startup and wants to support you in the best possible way, ensuring your success. In addition to working on an innovative and exciting product, you will also enjoy:

  • A competitive salary of £100K - £110K and a substantial option package.
  • Flexibility in the work arrangement, with options for remote working.
  • Hardware and gadgets to succeed, including books, events, and a budget for annual upgrades.
  • A shared office space near Euston station in London.
  • Potential to become Head of Engineering and build your own team.
