The job
About the Role
PlentyONE is looking for a Data Scientist to help SMB e-commerce merchants make smarter operational decisions through our ERP platform. You'll work with data spanning inventory, orders, fulfillment, and customer behavior to build models and insights that directly improve outcomes for small business owners — think demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and churn prediction, all built to work well even with the sparse data typical of smaller merchants.
What You'll Do
- Design and build models for demand forecasting, inventory optimization, reorder recommendations, and beyond
- Develop catalogue health-score models to help Merchants proactively increase the quality of their listing and increase their conversion
- Partner with Product to embed data-driven features directly into the platform (e.g., smart reorder alerts, pricing suggestions)
- Analyze usage and transaction data to identify product opportunities
- Build and maintain data pipelines in collaboration with Data Engineering
- Design receipts infrastructure to validate feature impact and model performance
- Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to non-technical stakeholders, including customers and execs
- Handle the practical challenges of SMB data: sparse history, seasonality, high variance across merchant types
Requirements
What You Bring
- 4+ years of experience as a Data Scientist or Applied ML role, ideally in e-commerce, retail, or SaaS
- Strong Python skills (pandas, scikit-learn, or similar); SQL fluency required
- Experience building customer-facing ML features (recommendations, forecasts, alerts) rather than purely internal analytics
- Experience with forecasting and time-series methods (e.g., inventory/demand forecasting)
- Track record of shipping models into production, not just notebooks
- Ability to work with messy, sparse, or inconsistent data, a common problem in SMB contexts
- Strong communication skills; able to translate model output into product recommendations
- Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift) and orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, dbt)
Nice to Have
- Background in supply chain, inventory management, or logistics data
- Familiarity with e-commerce platforms (Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon Seller Central, etc.)
