The container shipping industry is the backbone of global trade, with 90% of all goods transported by container. Despite its critical role, the industry faces inefficiencies: 50% of all container vessels are delayed coming into port, and fundamental planning processes are often done manually using basic tools and spreadsheets.

Portchain is revolutionizing this space with cloud-based solutions designed for the maritime industry. Their innovative products optimize berth and schedule operations for carriers and terminals. By leveraging predictive analytics, data sharing, and real-time updates, they enhance berth alignment and quayside operations. Their mission is to improve efficiency, collaboration, and sustainability by enabling Just-In-Time (JIT) arrivals, reducing fuel consumption, and lowering carbon emissions. Serving a global network, they help streamline operations and increase transparency in the shipping sector.

They’ve successfully onboarded a large part of the global container terminals and raised +$14M.

As VP of Engineering at Portchain, you will play a crucial role in the company's technical development and innovation. You will have technical responsibility for the implementation and development teams, setting the direction for Portchain’s platform. Your primary task will be to help build the tech department and remove any technical obstacles for the developers, ensuring that new features and solutions are implemented correctly. You aim to achieve autonomous teams co-owning the platform and its technical evolution. You should have a good understanding of the technical landscape and be able to articulate the technical choices to all internal and external stakeholders.

As Portchain's new VP of Engineering, you will lead the design, development, and support of software dedicated to the shipping industry, including planning tools, automation software, predictable and reliable operations, and asset utilization. You will work with an experienced organization that has honed their skills in this area for many years. In this role, your primary responsibilities will include:

• Build, coach, lead, and develop your team to high performance while maintaining a good culture
• Help facilitate effective meetings and drive their agile development process
• Ensuring solid scalability and quality architecture for their platform and products, including continuous identification of improvements
• Continuously and proactively leading and growing an agile Scrum team of dedicated engineers and ensuring that Best Practices and Processes are followed
• Help maintain and implement processes to support their development work
• Collaborate closely with the product and the rest of the engineering
• Staying close to development leading from the front driving velocity

To excel in this role, you need experience in a similar leadership role in a technology company, preferably in startup/scaleup, shipping, or another complex area. Additionally, having experience working with agile development methods, code reviews, and building high-performance, scalable SaaS apps will be a great advantage. You are not only technically sharp but also have excellent communication skills. You are someone who can use feedback from stakeholders to make the necessary technological improvements and adjustments. Furthermore, you will be able to contribute by having:

• Great people skills and can coach, lead, manage managers, and develop individuals
• Strong tech skills and experience and know when to use them
• A structured mindset and experience with helping your team perform their best
• A team player approach and collaborate well with different subject-matter-experts and stakeholders to increase the quality of the deliverables
• Demonstrated ability to identify, specify, and implement innovative technological solutions at a strategic level
• You know the technical pros and cons of the Node.js, React, and TypeScript ecosystem or similar high-level setups
• Architectural experience with Cloud services like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure
• Experience with building B2B and consumer quality products
